Lightning Safety Tips For Optimal Protection

Updated: Mar 5, 2022

A beautiful force of nature, lightning has long been admired for its power and ferocity and dreaded at the same time for its destructive capabilities.

Lightning is a massive discharge of atmospheric electricity which can occur suddenly and without warning. Because of its unpredictable nature, it is important to know how to protect yourself, your business, staff, and assets when a lightning storm begins.

Employers should recognize lightning as an occupational hazard and supervisors and workers should consider lightning safety tips seriously.

We at Lightning Eliminators & Consultant Inc., offer you very valuable tips, which if followed will go a long way in protecting what is very important to you. And we follow the same lightning safety tips at our company as well.

Some very important lightning safety tips

- Prior to beginning any work especially outdoors, check the weather reports, forecast and emergency notifications regarding thunderstorm activities

- Employers must consider rescheduling jobs to avoid workers being caught outside in hazardous weather conditions

- Watch for darkening clouds and increasing wind speed, which indicates developing thunderstorms

- Train your workers to seek shelter in buildings after hearing thunder or seeing lightning (of course! Let them know in advance which building to go to).

- If the safe building is not available in the vicinity, then hard-topped metal vehicles with rolled up windows are your next best option

- Corded phones, water and water bodies must be avoided at all cost when a lightning strikes

Lightning safety tips must be accompanied by an emergency action plan.

- Indicate how workers are notified about lightning safety warnings

- Inform supervisors and workers to take action immediately on seeing any warning signs of a thunderstorm or lightning

- Clearly identify the location for seeking shelter

- Determine when to suspend and resume work activities

- Account for the time needed for the workers to reach safe shelters
