Grounding rods have been around since Benjamin Franklin first discovered lightning was made of electricity. Logic might conclude, that if one were to position a metal conductive rod at the highest point on a structure, a lightning bolt would strike it, directing the electricity to ground, and thus averting the damage to the underlying structure. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. As strange as it may sound, metal does not attract lightning, nothing does.
Lightning can strike anything, and what it does strike isn’t always obvious. It could be a tree, a flagpole, a golf club a building or a person.
So what good is a grounding rod, then?
